Response Efforts
Hurricane Katrina and Sandy were both life changing storms that destroyed thousands of peoples homes and towns, leaving them with little to nothing. The big difference between theses two hurricanes were the response efforts. Katrina's response was possibly the worst response to a natural disaster in all of Americas history, due to the very slow response time, lack of supplies, very little preparation and communication. Also the difference between presidents is very apparent in their willingness to help. Sandy was handled very differently, there was much more time for residents to evacuate and make as many preparations as they could.
In the first video, the governor of New Jersey, Chris Christy talks to MSNBC about how much the federal government is cooperating and how the state officials have been great with preparations and recovery efforts and he could not be happier with how smoothly everything is going. In efforts to move as quickly as possible with relief Christy asked Obama to "expedite the Major Disaster Relief Declaration without the normal FEMA mumbo jumbo" the next morning the declaration was passed. There are still many obstacles to overcome with relief and everything returning to normal but New Jersey is off to a good start.
Unlike New Jersey, New Orleans did not get off to a good start both before and after Katrina. They government and state was clearly not prepared for the aftermath of Katrina and it was definitely visible to everyone. As Jack Cafferty stated "Its a disgrace and do not think the world isn't watching" he is talking about the governments response to Katrina and how it is the worst response he has ever seen. He also mentioned how president Busch did not arrive to New Orleans until 1 day later than he was suppose to, and when he did his attitude was very careless. This video makes it very clear that the government was not ready for a disaster like this, which made Americans very worrisome about who was supposed to be protecting them in events like Katrina.
In conclusion, the response to Sandy was much better in all aspects compared to Katrina. This has to do with the difference in the federal government and who was president at the time. Also FEMA's participation has a very big impact, New Jersey had the disaster declaration that eliminates FEMA's role in the immediate response to the hurricane. Also for Sandy there was more preparation unlike Katrina. Louisiana did not understand the amount of damage Katrina would cause and that unpreparedness was very clear in the aftermath.
