For my hurricane Katrina project I have many parts that relate to the course goals. For the audience and purpose goal I chose to use my website, my interview for the language and conventions goal, the top 5 for use of evidence goal, my photo gallery for the print/non-print media goal, and my interview again for the writing process goal.
A.Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.
I chose to use my website for this goal because it is the best way to get across to those that are interested in hurricane Katrina; there is no specific audience so a website is the perfect way to connect to a broad audience. The format of the website is very user friendly with multiple pages on every aspect of the hurricane such as a timeline of the hurricanes path to New Orleans or an interview with a family affected by Katrina.
B.Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.
For this goal I chose to use my interview with a family 5 years after Katrina, to discuss what they did when they knew Katrina would be hitting their home soon and what their opinions are of the response to Katrina. For this genre I had to use the right language that was more casual yet complex enough for more than a yes or no response. For example the first question was, why did you evacuate New Orleans? Where did you go? This is a simple question but it gives the interviewee a lot to talk about.
C.Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
Included in my website is a top 5 list of the hurricanes to hit the United States. I chose this for my use of evidence to show how devastating Katrina was compared to other hurricanes that have hit the U.S. It is a clear way for people to understand the cost each hurricane caused along with the death toll. Both of those categories were extremely high when it came to Katrina which is why it was placed at number 1.
D.Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres.
My photo gallery is a perfect example of using a genre that using non print and still proves a point for my project. The images in the photo gallery are all before and after’s of places that Katrina hit. I thought this was a much better way of showing the devastation than writing about it; it’s a great visual comparison and evidence of how devastating Katrina was. One tool that was extremely helpful with making the photo gallery was C.R.A.P., the format was very repetitive because all before pictures were in one column and all the after’s were in another. Everything was aligned and looked very organized.
E.Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
This goal was very useful for all my genres in this project but my interview was one that benefitted most from this goal, without the peer reviews and discussions it would not have been as effective as it was originally. Little details such as a caption for my picture and making my questions more professional and the answers more authentic to how someone in that position would answer them. These little things helped make my interview original yet authentic to a professional interview.
Reflection:
At the beginning of the semester I was very unsure as to what I wanted my topic for this project to be. I knew it had to be something that I was interested in and felt strongly about so I would enjoy creating it and working on it. I ended up choosing hurricane Katrina because it was something that not only affected those states that it hit but the entire nation. America came together in this tough time and did everything they could to help with relief efforts. I wanted to make a website informing anyone interested about Katrina, its size and effect on those it hit and also the controversial side of it with FEMA and other things that could have been done differently.
As I was creating this project I learned about so many genres that I would have never thought of when making a piece like this. With a multi genre project it gives so many ways to express what your topic is about instead of writing about every topic. There are other genres that can be better in explaining your point such as video, photo galleries, or brochures. Even though it is a better way to address a topic it is definitely something that you have to keep up with. My biggest problem with the multi genre project was having each genre or draft done on time. Once you get behind it is very hard to catch up and keep up with everything else.
A multi genre project is a very creative way to present a topic; I would use this when I become a teacher because it almost forces the student to be creative with the different genres. I never considered myself to be a creative student but I had no choice but to learn how, and for those students who are creative it is a great way for them to use their talent.
